Porcelain Flask Set by Lynne Turner, 1980
Lynne Turner’s sculptural flask set, cast in porcelain and signed at the base of the largest piece, reinterprets a Liao Dynasty flask silhouette through a contemporary, organic lens. Designed in 1979 after Turner saw the historical form in an exhibition catalogue, she crafted the flask’s body from eggplant and the handles and spout from bamboo, evoking a biomorphic impression—she imagined the flask as a bird and the cups as pipes.
A trailblazer in slip casting, she formulated her own slips, used airbrushed color, and fired her porcelain in multiple high-temperature passes in her Berkeley studio. The result is a piece that transcends its functional roots—a “functional sculpture” rich in historical homage yet profoundly modern, alive with touch, color, and quiet narrative.
